The Human Premium
What may become more valuable when intelligence becomes abundant
For decades, businesses paid a premium for access to expertise.
The lawyer knew what you did not.
The analyst could model what you could not.
The consultant could structure the problem.
The designer could produce the first draft.
AI is reducing the scarcity of many cognitive outputs.
When decent analysis, writing, imagery and code become cheap and abundant, what becomes expensive?
Possibly, the human parts that are harder to scale.
Abundance changes value
When information was scarce, access to information had value.
Search made information abundant. Curation became more valuable.
When production becomes abundant, selection, taste, judgement and trust can become more important.
AI may create a similar shift.
A hundred reasonable strategy options can be generated in seconds. The scarce capability becomes choosing the one worth committing to.
Human value may migrate rather than disappear
Consider a doctor using AI support.
The machine may analyse patterns, summarise evidence and suggest possibilities.
The doctor still has to communicate uncertainty to a frightened family, understand context not present in the data and carry responsibility for the decision.
Consider an investment committee.
AI can produce scenarios quickly. The committee still has to judge incentives, governance, character and what level of uncertainty is acceptable.
Consider education.
AI can explain a concept endlessly. A great teacher notices when the student is ashamed to admit they did not understand.
Trust may become a premium product
As synthetic content increases, provenance matters.
Who actually stands behind this recommendation?
Who will answer if it is wrong?
Was this tested?
Is there a person whose reputation is attached?
Abundant intelligence can increase the value of accountability.
Taste becomes more visible
If everyone can produce ten competent logos, decks or articles, the differentiator is not generation. It is taste.
What should be removed?
Which insight is banal?
Which option is elegant?
What is appropriate for this audience?
Taste is trained through experience and exposure. AI can imitate patterns, but a human or team still decides what the brand wants to stand for.
The premium is not “human because human”
Humans are inconsistent, biased and often slow. There is no reason to preserve unnecessary inefficiency for sentimental reasons.
The human premium should exist where human involvement adds something real:
context;
empathy;
responsibility;
moral judgement;
taste;
relationship;
trust;
meaning.
Questions worth sitting with
- Which part of your professional value comes from producing information that AI is rapidly commoditising?
- Which part comes from judgement, trust, context or relationship?
- What human capability should you deepen precisely because AI is getting better?
Leave points
- Abundant cognitive output can shift value from production toward selection and judgement.
- AI may commoditise some expertise while increasing the value of accountability and trust.
- Human value is strongest where context, relationship and responsibility matter.
- Taste becomes more important when generation becomes cheap.
- Do not defend human inefficiency; identify where human involvement creates real additional value.
